Sustainability is changing the packaging industry

As Prof. Matthias Niemeyer, CEO of the Uhlmann Group, explained: “Sustainability, process efficiency and increasingly stringent regulatory requirements are challenges that have arrived in the packaging industry with full force. They are key thematic areas that we must manage – not just for the pharmaceutical industry. We see this every day when we talk with our customers. It is an important sign that the leading trade show is highlighting these themes. Of course, we are very pleased and proud that we have been able to make a contribution here.”

In his keynote, Prof. Niemeyer showed the specific challenges that have confronted both Uhlmann and the entire pharmaceutical packaging industry. During a tour of the factory at Uhlmann Group headquarters, the participants acquired insights into the product developments and processes with which the company positions itself as an innovative solution provider in the market.

Sustainability requirements open up worldwide opportunities for innovative solutions

Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack, Portfolio Processing & Packaging, and Richard Clemens, Managing Director of VDMA, Food Industry Machines and Packaging Machines, provided information about specific developments in the global packaging market. Delivery bottlenecks and material shortages still plague the global market, a situation that will be amplified by climate change. Packaging companies in Germany and the EU are not the only ones that are struggling with these challenges. However, the situation has also resulted in new areas of business: the development of new materials, the design of resource and recycling-friendly packaging and processes, and the provision of digitally-based services. With their statistics on the market’s development, the two industry experts impressively documented the dynamic movement in the packaging markets worldwide.
