Uhlmann Group presents integrated pharmaceutical packaging solutions

Attracting approximately 650 visitors from some 50 countries and supplemented by about 25 exhibiting partner companies, the Pharmazing Days 2019 again proved to be one of the major trade events for pharmaceutical packaging. The organizers, the companies of the Uhlmann Group, used the three-day symposium in mid-June to present their integral pharmaceutical packaging solutions. Uhlmann Pac-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG exhibited its new packaging lines for solid and liquid dose products, as well as a modular Software Suite. Koch Pac-Systeme, Cremer Speciaalmachines, and Wonder Packing Machinery extended the portfolio spectrum with their customized packaging solutions. Among the visitors were international guests from North and South America, Asia, the Arab world, and Europe. Their feedback was positive.

“Pharmaceutical manufacturers are currently challenged by decreasing batch volumes and increasing pressure toward digitalization. We develop integral solutions for our customers. Comprising packaging equipment, services, and digital applications, they help to meet such challenges. And we share our know-how with customers. That this is highly valued was made clear to us at our Pharmazing Days in June”, says Michael Mrachacz, Managing Director Sales at Uhlmann.
The pharmaceutical packaging summit is held every three years at the Uhlmann headquarters in Laupheim in southern Germany. Uhlmann offers its customers the opportunity to establish contacts, learn about latest trends in the sector, and participate in professional discussions. Key themes were digitalization and the optimization of the pharmaceutical packaging process in the context of production line upgrades, servicing, and maintenance, as well as using the Six Sigma strategy.

Keen interest in digital issues and solutions
“How can digital applications be integrated into existing processes? How can production data create added value? How can greater availability, better efficiency, and higher speed be attained? These questions posed by customers led to keen interest in presentations held on digitalization, as well as in our digital solutions themselves”, reports Michael Mrachacz. Visitors to the Pharmazing Days were able to experience the newly structured Uhlmann Software Suite in the new center of excellence for digitalization. The software modules can be combined individually and support all indirect processes such as administration, planning, controlling, automation, and standardization. Visitors from the trade were able to try out Process Guidance, an innovative solution supporting the execution and documentation of standard operating procedures (SOP), or personally test a Digital Training module. Furthermore, Uhlmann presented other Software Suite modules such as Supervisory Control for highly transparent production processes, or Condition Monitoring. This module automatically monitors and analyzes the machine status on a continuous basis, promoting a consistently high level of availability and top production quality. Attending customers and other interested visitors responded positively to the entire Software Suite. “It has long been recognized by the sector that machines alone are not the answer. If we want to optimize, we need integral process automation and digitalization. What we have now seen and heard from Uhlmann on this subject helps us enormously”, was the comment of one visitor to the event. Another added: “We are planning to introduce Condition Monitoring across all lines and production sites. The live demonstration offered by Uhlmann was of particular interest to us for that reason.”

Customized integral solutions for pharmaceutical packaging
Using the motto “Solutions Beyond Packaging”, the Uhlmann Group convinced visitors with an extensive range of products and services that meets customer requirements along the entire value-added chain.
Uhlmann Pac-Systeme GmbH & Co. KG demonstrated two new packaging lines. Blister line BEC 200 offers ideal entry into the premium segment of solid dose product packaging. Combining top quality at an attractive price with flexibility, it is an interesting option for contract packers, or the manufacturers of generics and dietary supplements. In view of straightforward setup processes and fast format changeovers, this line is ideal for small batches. The BEC 200 packages solid dose products in up to 200 blisters and 150 cartons per minute. Should demand increase, an upgrade allows a maximum output of 300 blisters per minute.
The second newcomer is the BLU 200, a blister packaging line for liquid dose medicines in syringes, ampoules, vials, cartridges, bottles, and pens. Significant factors contributing to its high cost-effectiveness are gently product handling, flexibility, fast cleaning and format changeovers, as well as straightforward operation. Its modular design concept offers a variety of configuration options to meet all requirements. This means that the BLU 200 forms the heart of a flexible, customized line for the packaging of liquid dose products.
Cremer Speciaalmachines from the Netherlands, specialists in 100 percent reliable counting, presented the new, conventional bottle filling line IBL 100 as well as a compact, star-wheel Bottling Center IBC 50. The established bottle filling line IBC 50, extended with a cGMP-compliant single tablet reject function, was likewise demonstrated. Interested in tapping into additional market sectors,
Wonder Packing Machinery exhibited the eBL 350. This reliable and cost-efficient line comprises a blister machine and a cartoner, and is built in China.
As experts in customized machine construction, Koch Pac-Systeme also presented its portfolio. This includes the integrated processing of large-volume batches, feeding to end-of-line packaging, or the semi-automated sealing of small to medium-sized batches. Koch demonstrated the Turntable Machine KDT at the Pharmazing Days with an integrated Track & Trace by Uhlmann solution.
Michael Mrachacz was pleased with the event overall. “The Pharmazing Days were a big success for the Uhlmann Group. We will maintain the Pharmazing Days as a trade event, adapting the format in line with customer and market needs.”
