Why sustainability matters

Sustainability within the pharma industry is coming under increasing public scrutiny. Big pharma's contribution to climate change has been subject to criticism, especially since the industry produces more greenhouse gases than the automotive industry. Customers, patients and consumers are demanding that pharmaceutical companies take sustainable action, and investors prefer "green" investments. Governments have already introduced stricter regulations – and this is only the beginning. All parties involved must take responsibility for helping to build a better world.

Many pharma companies have therefore set themselves ambitious sustainability targets and are assuming environmental and social responsibility. They are striving to reduce future risks and help safeguard the future of the planet – for the environment, for society and for us all.

Uhlmann is committed to sustainability

We see it as our role to use our solutions to secure the global production of pharmaceuticals, which are essential to the health of entire generations.

Responsibility and sustainability are an inextricable part of this. For Uhlmann, it is therefore a duty and an obligation to think long-term and act sustainably with a focus on the future.

To meet these requirements, we are guided by international standards, including through our participation in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) and the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). In 2022, Uhlmann was awarded an EcoVadis gold medal for its sustainability – for us, this is just the first step on our path to increased sustainability.

Our solutions for sustainable pharma packaging

Sustainable Pharma can only be achieved by companies that focus on the entire process, from development to the supply chain, with every partner committed to their role in improving sustainability. Uhlmann is happy to accept this challenge and guides you even at the early phase of planning.

Below, you can find out more about three of our current solutions that are already helping our customers to make a direct contribution to achieving their sustainability goals today. This includes, for example, the development of sustainable packaging concepts, such as mono-packaging, which you can use to increase the recyclability of your portfolio. Alternatively, our expertise in developing sustainable packaging design can be employed right from the start.

You can look forward to what the future of pharma packaging will hold, and how you can make your pharma packaging meet the increasing demands being made!

Gentle packaging of parenteral products – the sustainable way

The material cycle is one option to use resources responsibly. There is a prerequisite: Materials such as packaging must be easy to recycle. However, with pharmaceuticals, protecting the product and the patient must come first.

With innovative packaging lines, such as the BLU 200, parenterals are packaged in mono-materials like polypropylene (PP) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET), allowing safety and sustainability to go hand in hand. The flexible line with an integrated Track & Trace solution offers an effective, automated packaging process and can be easily integrated into digital production environments thanks to the Pexcite open software platform. These also offer high levels of productivity and energy efficiency.

Direct in carton for parenteral products – the innovative evolution

The proportion of parenterals in the pharma industry is growing, with liquid medicines driving the market of the future. This means that pharma companies need secondary packaging that protects the product and is user- and environmentally friendly. We meet these challenges with more environmentally friendly, pioneering materials.

Our solution: The new PTC 200 cartoner line which packages ampoules, vials, syringes and other devices in carton trays. This not only gives you sustainable parenteral packaging with a wide choice of formats, in line with international guidelines on climate protection, it also increases efficiency, enhances user-friendliness and ensures Uhlmann's trademark safety.
