  4. Live in Laupheim: The future of parenteral packaging

The future of parenteral packaging in focus at the Uhlmann on-site event 2023

The efficient use of materials and the recyclability of packaging are becoming increasingly important in the pharmaceutical industry. The challenges associated with this development were among the key topics at the Parenteral Packaging Event 2023. Together with various partner companies, Uhlmann demonstrated the solutions already available today for packaging parenteral products in a gentle, material-efficient and traceable way while using recyclable packaging materials.

There was a lot on offer at the Uhlmann Campus in Laupheim: 11 presentations by experts from the pharmaceutical industry, 3 workshops, 2 packaging lines and 5 partner companies.

Presentation of the latest packaging lines for parenteral products

The highlight at the Uhlmann stand was the premiere of the Parenteral Tray Center PTC 200, showcased in line with the S 500 serialisation unit and the EC 12 case packer, as well as an upstream vial labelling unit from Uhlmann partner Bausch+Ströbel. The PTC 200 enables parenteral products to be packaged in cardboard trays, creating the conditions for replacing conventional plastic trays with alternative packaging materials. The system is distinguished by its high level of flexibility. It also reliably processes trays made from other materials while handling sensitive products such as syringes, ampoules, vials, and pens with exceptional care.

The second line that packed live on site was a BLU 200 consisting of a blister machine and cartoner plus S 500 serialization unit and the case packer with ECP 12 palletizing module. Special features of this line: the blister made of PP mono material and the tracking of the products - from the syringe to the pallet. Thanks to Pexcite Track & Trace, each syringe can be clearly tracked and the production data can be easily evaluated.

Exclusive lecture program

In a series of engaging presentations, packaging experts provided insights into a range of topics. Discussions covered not only the challenges of transitioning to resource-efficient secondary packaging, but also strategies for successfully engaging multiple stakeholders in project implementation, as well as approaches to reducing waste and achieving recyclability when packaging light-sensitive pharmaceuticals.

A pharmacist gave us an insight into a high-speed solution for handling vials that has already been delivered. Of course, the topic of Pharma 4.0 was also on the agenda. Among other things, there were answers to the question of how to manage a modern value chain in pharmaceutical production.

Workshops

Innovation up close: The various workshops offered by Uhlmann and our partners Südpack Medica and Faller Packaging provided practical insights. For example, there was a live demonstration of the latest Pexcite Smart Production applications for Pharma 4.0, interaction with a packaging lifecycle calculator and a design thinking and prototyping workshop for carton trays and mono-material blisters.

Our partners

We would like to thank our partner companies Bausch + Ströbel, Faller Packaging, Südpack Medica, pester pac automation and SG Stevanato Group. The topics presented by our partner companies rounded off the program perfectly, enabling us to give our guests an understanding of the packaging of parenteral products along the entire value chain.
