A career that feels like home: Why the Schultheis family trusts Uhlmann

At Uhlmann, family business means trust, closeness, and perspective – across generations, as demonstrated by the Schultheis family.
Family Day – more than just an open house
When Uhlmann invited them to the Family Day, the Schultheis family came as a group of six. The father, Thomas, has worked in manufacturing for over 30 years, and daughter Zoe joined the company in 2016 as a technical product designer. For both of them, Family Day became a symbol of a company that not only invites families, but also involves them. “It was just wonderful to be able to bring the company to life, not only for me, but also for my grandmother, my mother, and my boyfriend,” explains Zoe. For Thomas, it was a rare moment to be seen: “Our hall is otherwise rather isolated from everything else. The fact that everyone was able to walk through also meant alot to us.” He promptly took charge of his family, showed them the machines, explained the processes, and was delighted by their interest.
Regional ties and proximity
For both Schultheis family members, the commute to work is short, which is a good thing. Baltringen, where Thomas and Zoe live, is only six kilometers away from the Uhlmann site in Laupheim. A daily commute that is not only convenient, but also the expression of a conscious decision: For the region, for stability and for an employer that offers both. “Many others drive long distances, but I’m here in ten minutes. That’s a real plus point, especially with a family,” says Thomas. For Zoe, it was a given that she would stay here after completing her training. Her involvement in the sports club, her apartment in Baltringen, her decision against a fresh start far away – all of this is also connected to Uhlmann. “My life is centered here, and Uhlmann fits in perfectly,” she explains.
„Staying here in the region was a no-brainer for me – my boyfriend is from the area, I’m involved in the Baltringen sports club, my life is centered here – and Uhlmann fits in perfectly.‟

What makes Uhlmann different – and better
Strong, open, reliable – at Uhlmann, these values are not just part of our mission statement. They shape everyday life. For Zoe, flexibility is what counts: A modern working time model, opportunities to work from home, and the trust placed in employees to organize themselves. “I can organize my week with a great deal of freedom. That really helps if you also have commitments outside of the office, like I do with my volunteer work.” Thomas finds working for Uhlmann in the Manufacturing area has a very different structure and character from shift work. And yet the underlying principles remain the same. “In the past, many things were more rigid, but today there is regular information from management, open discussions, and exchange.” He particularly appreciates the freedom he has: Decisions can be made locally; trust is not only demanded, but also given. “And if something doesn’t work out, then we bear the burden together.”

„I make decisions on the spot. When something doesn’t work out, we stand behind it together – that’s what I consider to be a genuine leadership culture.‟

More than just an employer – a constant in times of change
For Zoe, choosing Uhlmann as her training company was a conscious decision, and not just because her father works there. But because he was, and still is, happy there. “When someone from the family has been with the company for decades and speaks positively about it, you go into a job interview with a completely different feeling,” she explains. She still remembers it today: “The confirmation came on my 16th birthday, which was a wonderful gift.” Uhlmann has changed, it has grown and it has become more international and more technical. But at a time when many companies are struggling to attract young talent and loyalty has become rare, the Schultheis family shows that there is another way. When a company thinks long-term, communicates openly, promotes development, and fosters closeness, bonds are formed that are more than just an employment contract.
